STD's (Sexually Transmitted Diseases)
An STD is any disease spread primarily through sexual activity. STD's are caused by viruses, bacteria and other kinds of germs cause STD's. STD's can be avoided by using condoms or other protective measures during sex, not having sex with prostitutes and other high-risk individuals and by not using illegal drugs.
Herpes
Herpes is a disease that more than 1 in 10 Australian’s have. Herpes is spread through anal, vaginal and oral sex when a condom isn’t used and genital skin-to-skin contact is made. Many people think that oral sex is safe but Herpes can be spread from the mouth to genitals during oral
sex. Herpes is spread through three different ways. One is spread through kissing and mainly causes cold sore.The other type is spread through sexual contact and mainly causes genital soresThe other type is spread through sexual contact and mainly causes genital sores
Symptoms
Small painful blisters are caused by the two types of herpes. . The other type is spread through sexual contact and mainly causes genital sores.
Some people show no signs of infection. Others suffer from painful genital blisters, pain on passing urine,
fever, swollen glands and headaches. The first outbreak of blisters may be the
worst; further outbreaks are generally less frequent and less
severe.

Chlamydia
Chlamydia is the most common STI among young Australia’s. It can affect both men and women and is caused by a
build-up of bacteria. Chlamydia is usually spread by vaginal or anal sex without a condom.
Reported patience with chlamydia has quadrupled in the last ten years. With 80% of the reported people
that have chlamydia being aged 15 to 29 year olds.
When Chlamydia is left untreated in women, it can lead to pelvic inflammatory disease causing chronic
pelvic pain and even infertility. In men Chlamydia can lead to long-term
infection of the testes.
Symptoms
Most people don’t have any symptoms. If you have had unprotected sex, it is important that you see your doctor about taking a test.
for STI's. Men may get symptoms such as clear discharges from their penises or pain when you
urinate. Women may experience bleeding between periods or after sex, pelvic pain or pain when
urinating.
Prevention & Treatment
Always use a condom with water-based lubricant. See your local doctor for a swab or a urine test to
determine whether you have chlamydia. Chlamydia can be easily treated with antibiotics; in this process sex should be avoided for 7 days after treatment and if you do have sex during this time period it is vital that you use a condom.
