THE balance of power in relationships
The balance of power in relationships has proven to be the reason of most conflicts in relationships. The balance of the power is different for every relationship and should be monitored accordingly for each individual. Dr Norah Dunbar believes that an even balance of power in relationships is the best combination as each individual has an equal role to play. Sayings like “it’s a two way street” demonstrate such qualities.
The communication studies led by Dr Norah Dunbar is a program that consists of videoing couples in search of clues to who is the more dominant person. Most couples that go through this say that the power are equally shared. Norah Dunbar proceeds to play back the tapes in order to nut out the problems.
Another interesting fact is that most couples see the power in cleaning. What they are really talking about is the division of labor in households.
Dr Norah Dunbar shares her research with CSULB students she shows them that inequality between genders still exists. A perfect example of this is that when asked women say they would never ask out a man on a date. They all say they would never, such responses “He’ll think im easy”. They are right when men are interviewed they say it as an invitation for sex. This shows that the battle of power even relates and exists in the simplest forms of asking someone out.
The balance of power will always exist and just needs to be monitored in each relationship. Such strategies as talking about your feelings, eye contact in conversations and really listen8ing to your partner are very important. With a combination of these things hopefully you will have a healthy balanced relationship.
